New Year's Eve Look feat. TINYPRINTS!

New Year's Eve is the perfect excuse to bring out the glitter and sequins.  While you'll find me on the couch in some comfy PJ's this New Year's Eve, I couldn't help but put together an outfit totally ready for an evening out on the town.
new years

I usually go for simpler looks, but New Year's is a time to dress it up a little bit more.  I paired this white and black J. Crew stripped mini with a black top with sequined sleeves.  To bring out the gold in the skirt, I paired the outfit with bold gold jewelry and gold glitter nailpolish.  (P.S. Butter London Westend Wonderland is my favorite glitter nail polish!  It only takes two coats to be completely opaque!)  Add a simple pair of black pumps (and some black tights if it's chilly) and you've got a fairly simple outfit with some pizzazz!

This outfit was inspired by some of tinyprints holiday invitations.  Aren't they the cutest?  I loved the gold and black designs that played on metallics and glitter!  A new tinyprints feature is the ability to change the trim of the cards.  As you can see below, I used the scallop trip on the pop, fizz, clink cards and a fancier cutout trim on the Happy 2014 cards.

(L-R)

My favorite part?  Tinyprints takes everything into account when designing their cards.  They allow for so much customization, from font colors to including pictures.  Then, they take care of the hard part!  Some of the designs even have matching return-address labels!

Aren't the backs of these cards even stunning?

I am just obsessed with these tinyprints designs...makes me wish I was having a big New Year's Party that called for some fancy invitations!

Why Country Music in 2013 Was "Awful"

I don't know about y'all, but I listen to a lot of country music.  My car playlist is full of Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, and some of my other favorite country artists.  However, if you listen to a bunch of "pop" Country back to back...you'll realize that most of the songs have the same theme.

This video nails it right on the head.  I was seriously dying laughing the first time I watched it!  Since then I've probably watched it another four or five times because it is so hilarious!

What do y'all think?  Accurate?

Belated Merry Christmas

Belated Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to all of my blog friends!
{via Lilly Pulitzer}
I hope y'all had as great of a Christmas as I did!  The best part, even more than the presents and cookies and pineapple stuffing, spending time with my parents and sister.  After weeks of long nights in the library, I crave quiet time with my family.  What could be better than Christmas Movie marathons that last long into the night with the people that I love most?  Nothing!

How do y'all celebrate the holidays?

The City That Doesn't Sleep

Yesterday my family went on a day trip to New York City.  My sister is currently working in the city, so she showed us around.  I hadn't been in a few years, so it was refreshing to being in the hustle and bustle of a big city again.  But, it did make me realize that maaaaaaaybe I don't want to get an internship there this summer.

My favorite part of the day was lunch.  We went to Veselka, a Ukrainian restaurant, in the East Village.  The food was delicious and well worth the wait!  We knew it was going to be good when it was the only restaurant in that area that we saw with a line of people waiting outside.

It's Better To Give Than It Is To Receive

I firmly believe that buying and giving gifts is much better than receiving them.  Since Christmas is only a few days away, if you haven't done any shopping yet, I'd recommend you hop to it!  That's why I've put together a list of easy to find gifts in a range of prices.  These gifts would be perfect for your friend, roommate, sister, or maybe even mother!

gifts

Kate Spade Thermal Cup / Tervis Tumbler / Alex & Ani Bracelet / C. Wonder Tote / Moleskine Notebook / Bath & Bodyworks Hand Sanitizer / Bath & Bodyworks Mason Jar Candle / EOS Lip Balm Set / Baggu Nylon Tote / Essie Mini Polish Cube

What are some of your favorite gifts to give?

Christmas Cookies

I think the saying "go big, or go home" was created to describe my family's Christmas cookie making habits.  We don't just make sugar cookies..or chocolate chip cookies.  No, no, that would be way too simple.  Instead, spread over three days of baking (usually just two, but we got way too tired this year) we make eight, if I'm counting correctly, different types of cookies.

We make chocolate chip, cut out sugar cookies, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter, thumbprint, crescent, and date filled cookies.  Oh, and we don't just make one or two trays of each kind.  Some types, ahem chocolate chip, we QUADRUPLE the recipe and end up with probably 20 trays of cookies.

When you're baking, be sure to differentiate if your recipe calls for cups of butter versus pounds of butter.  If you accidentally use one cup instead of one pound, your "dough" may look more like this...

But then when you mix in the missing butter, bake them, and coat them in powdered sugar, no one really cares because they still taste really good.  But that may just be the powdered sugar talking.

And it wouldn't be Christmas without some festively decorated cut out cookies!

What are your favorite kind of Christmas cookies?

I'm Home!

By a stroke of pure luck and generosity, I'm home!  I got home last night, and luckily the drive home was extremely uneventful!

I was originally going to wait until this morning to drive home because I had a take home Psychology test that had to be slipped under my professors door.  I took one look at the weather report (and my mom texted me about a bajllion times), and we realized that I either needed to drive home on Friday or wait until Sunday.  My psychology professor was kind enough to allow me to scan my final and email it to her to submit, so I drove home last night!

And the best part of today....
it snowed!  It snowed!
Before it started snowing, I ran out to grocery store and just happened to come home with...a new haircut, too!

Of course Alice and I had to play in the snow a bit!

It seems so weird to look at my new haircut!  I must have gotten 6 or 7 inches cut off!

Taking photos in the snow isn't easy (for the model or the photographer), but I'm so happy with how these turned out!
If it's snowing where you live, stay inside!  Cuddle up with a warm blanket (and hopefully a snuggly puppy) and relax!

Rebecca

I am one happy college kid right now.  Only a few things and less than two days separate me from going home for over a month.

(1) Three classes.
(2) One two-hour shift at work.
(3) One take-home, open-book Psychology test.
(3) A 5.5-9 hour drive home.

and the best part...

baking cookies with this girl tonight!
(I actually cannot wait for this.  I haven't seen Breck since before Thanksgiving Break! I can't wait to hear all about her engagement!! AHHHHH!)

In a few days I hope to be back to blogging!

Take A Break

Need to take a study break today?  Look no further...I've pulled some of my favorite Ted Talks and Levo Articles!

Ted Talks range in topic from technology and entertainment to business and global issues.  They are from 3 minutes to 18 minutes long.  Because I'm trying to help you take a study break, I've selected TED Talks that are between 3 and 6 minutes long.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5

Another way I like to take a study break is with some articles from The Levo League.  Their articles cover just about every topic for young professional women.  Some are serious, while others are goofy and funny.  Their articles aren't long, so it's the perfect "quick read" between chapters of Psychology notes.

What are some of your favorite quick study breaks?

11 o'clock Saturday morning...and I've already been awake studying for over an hour.  That's right, ladies (and gentlemen?), the non-stop studying has begun.

As I dig into a full days worth of projects, papers, readings, and research, Katniss would like to give you some encouraging words...

This is the first time I've ever put a gif in a blog post...but I think it's pretty appropriate.

Study hard, but don't forget to take breaks, get proper sleep and nutrition, and still take time for yourself!

Study Essentials

With finals right around the corner, the only thing on my mind is studying and locking myself in the library.  Although I still have a week of classes before the actual exam period starts, a lot of my work is due before the end of classes.

When it comes to studying in the library, I pack my backpack (I use the North Face Borealis) full of the essentials and intend to spend hours and hours chugging away on my to do list.  There are a few things that I consider essential...

study essentials

A waterbottle to stay hydrated, colorful pens to keep notetaking and to do list making fun, a thermal cup to keep your coffee, tea, or hot chocolate warm, a snack, headphones to listen to background noise or take a quick study break, a back up battery for your iPhone (or a USB cord to charge it with your computer), and highlighters to cross things off of your to do list.

What are your study essentials?

Happy studying y'all!

Glory, glory! I'm a Chung Mung!

The time has finally come!  I am a full-fledged Chung Mung!  My days of wearing my little ghostie friend are over!  Last night was our initiation and I couldn't be more happy!
My mom (Sorority Equivalent : Big), Nina, and I
Cherry Blossom & Gardenia
In addition to our initiation traditions, we also received our hats!  The Chung Mungs are the second oldest Tap Club on campus, so as you can imagine, our initiation traditions are very extensive.  Our hats are another tradition.  Each tap club has a certain color hat with their logo on them and our moms decorate them to show my personality and our lineage.

Mama Neens made me the most adorable box to keep all of my CM treasures in!

Each Tap Class has exactly thirteen members, and I am so glad to call these girls my sisters now!  It has been a long few months together, but we did it!  We made it, and it's just that much more exciting now!

My Tap Sisters! (Sorority Equivalent : Pledge Class)
I am so obsessed with my hat!  Nina knows me so well!  She incorporated Lilly, bows, my monogram, and even a little beagle charm!

What we keep we lose, and only what we give is our own.
Glory, glory, I'm a Chung Mung!

What She Wore: Thanksgiving

My family goes crazy for Thanksgiving.  We probably cook eight different vegetables, two turkeys, and so many other casseroles and stuffings.  Needless to say, being comfortable after eating a huge meal is top priority on my Thanksgiving.

I chose these velour spotted jeans from Joe Fresh because they feel like leggings while still having pockets and a zipper like jeans.  Perfect after digging into some of my favorite dishes - green bean casserole, stuffing, and cranberry sauce!

Pants: Joe Fresh
Shirt: Old Navy
Vest: Old Navy
Shoes: Vince Camuto

I think this is a Signature Breck pose!

What did you wear to your Thanksgiving Dinner?

Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a difficult holiday.  Not because I'm not thankful, but because I'm thankful for so much.  I couldn't even begin to list everything I'm thankful for, let alone each person who has positively impacted my life.  From my friends at school to my Chung Mung sisters and my family to The Smart Girls Group, I am eternally grateful for each and every one of you.

I'm so thankful for the support and love of my family in the past year (and the past twenty years), the amazing academic opportunities at Sweet Briar, the twenty-six beautiful Chung Mung sisters I've recently acquired, and my precious beagle, Alice.

I'm thankful for each and every one of you.  Without you, blogging would be pretty boring.  I have met some of the most fabulous people through blogging.  Y'all (and you know who you are, I'm sure of it!) are a constant source of motivation and inspiration.  I don't know where the next year will take me, in terms of blogging, but bloggy friends make it all the better!

(And I couldn't leave you without a picture of little Alice with her cable knit sweater on!)

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Rebecca

My poor little blog... I had the grandest intentions in the world of spending my time at home writing and scheduling posts, redesigning the layout, catching up on reading everyone else's posts, and be a better blogger in general.

But then this happened...

Yup. Alice.
I came home to a snuggly, sleepy beagle..and the rest is history.  It's impossible to say no to her little face when she practically begs for you to just get out a huge fuzzy blanket and curl up on the couch with her.  So instead of being a better blogger, I've taken the past few days to catch up on my never ending Hulu queue, read a book for school, and continue reading Emily Freeman's Grace for the Good Girl.  And to be honest, I wouldn't have it any other way.  After the stressful past few weeks at school, I couldn't have asked for anything more.

I know that the last two weeks of classes are going to be even more stressful with final papers and projects, so I'm taking in these quiet moments and preparing for what's to come.

How are you spending your Thanksgiving break?

Today's the day!

Come 11 o'clock, me and my trusty Ford Escape will be hitting the road and doing this...

The only redeeming factor of the drive is coming home to this...
(Oh...and my parents, too...I guess!)

I'm so thankful that Thanksgiving is here...time to relax on the couch with Alice, bake pumpkin and apple pies with my Mom, and hopefully get this blog back into working order with a normal schedule!

What are you doing this weekend?

Comfy Cozy

I'm going to be completely honest with y'all here...I feel so awkward taking outfit pictures.  I've probably taken four or five sets that I've just never posted because they were so awkward.

This morning I was helping my dear friend Amrit take some headshots for a conference she is attending at the beginning of next year.  We were fooling around on campus, and I decided to ask her to take an outfit of the day photo.  Much to my surprise, I actually love the way these turned out!

This Lilly dress is one of my favorite dresses.  It's so comfy and cozy and perfect for those days when you'd rather be wearing leggings and an oversized tee shirt!  I'm heading home tomorrow morning, so today just seems to be dragging on forever!  Luckily, my Jonah was clean, so I threw it on ready to take on the rest of the day.

Dress : Lilly Pulitzer "Follow the Leader" Jonah
Tights : Old Navy
Boots : RSVP via Zappos
Glasses : Ray Ban

(Let's not take note of how much I need a hair cut...woah for crazy hair!)

What is your "go-to" outfit when you have to look put together but you'd rather be in sweats?

WILW: Friends

We leave for break in only a few days, so of course professors have been piling on the assignments and projects.  Just off the top of my head I know I have to revise a paper, finish my Social Media and Marketing journal, start a research paper and write an annotated bibliography, and read an entire play in Spanish.  I'm sure there are so many things I'm forgetting, because honestly I just write it all down in my planner and hope I'm not missing anything!

Stress levels at Sweet Briar are high, but I am so lucky to have amazing friends to study with in the library, eat dinner with, and laugh so hard until we cry because we are so sleep deprived.

Left, Kate and I at Hampden-Sydney last weekend
Right, Chloe and I on Chung Mung Ode Night
Kate and I are both Spanish majors, and Chloe and I are both in Chung Mungs.  And the best part about having two amazing friends?  They both love each other too...and we're hoping to be able to all live together next year!  Poor Chloe might have to brush up on her Spanish skills though, because you'll probably be able to find Kate and I in the library by following the chitter chatter of "vale, si, and que estupido."  (We're clearly a charming pair.)

Sweet Mackenzie

I need to tell you about one of the sweetest people I know.  A few years ago, I stumbled across a blog called Twirls & Curls.  The author, Mackenzie, was in high school at the time.  She was (and still is) incredibly well-spoken and mature.  Sometime during the summer, she posted that she would be taking her blogging over to a new platform on tumblr, and Mackenzie-Ann Believe was born.

{from her blog}
In addition to Mackenzie's wise words (especially for a college freshman!), she has some of the best photography skills I've seen in a long time.  And that's saying a lot because I am a big photo nerd (took AP Photo in high school...)!

{via her instagram, @mackenzieathrone}
Her posts are honest, candid, and genuine, and that is one of my favorite parts of Mackenzie.  Over the summer we started emailing each other...everything from college advice and summer job woes to book recommendations and prayer requests.  Her unwavering faith has been a huge inspiration to me this year.  As we all know, transitioning into a new environment (especially a new school hundreds of miles away from home) is difficult, but sweet Mackenzie has made the absolute best of her experience.

Recently, Mackenzie and I began texting each other inspiring verses and just generally motivating messages.  Dear Lord, I cannot tell you how much of a blessing Miss Mackenzie has been in my life!  Not only is she honest in her blog posts, but oh my, through her emails and texts, I know that Mackenzie portrays herself on the internet the way she is in real life.  Her reminders of grace, prayer, and forgiveness have reminded me how I want to live my life vs. how I see others live their lives.

The only problem?  She's on the exact opposite side of the country in California.
But as I've expressed before, blogger besties are the best friends.  Even if I can't share a Starbucks drink over motivating conversations (like I do with Breck), I am still thankful for the conversations that Mackenzie and I share over text and email!

And guess what?  Today is Mackenzie's birthday!  What a joyful day to give thanks for such a beautiful friend!

Do you have someone in your life that is constantly inspiring and motivating you?

Study Break

I don't know about you, but with the day winding down to Thanksgiving break, professors are piling on the work and I've been spending more time than ever in the library!  I know that once we return from Thanksgiving break, the work is only going to multiply and then it will be time to prepare for final exams.

I never used to study in the library.  However, this year, a new wing was added to our library.  It has tons of natural light, and the clean aesthetic makes it a perfect place to pound out a paper or finish up a take home test.

Don't believe me?  Check out this picture...

{via}

During those long days in the library, it's important to take study breaks.  I've read a few articles, one from the MIT Center for Excellence, that have all suggested that breaks should be taken between each assignment or after ninety minutes of work.  These breaks should last between 10 and 15 minutes.  Some of the best study breaks are the ones that will get you away from your computer and chair, get your blood circulating, and your heart rate going.

One thing that I am eternally grateful for at Sweet Briar is our honor code.  The beginning states that "Sweet Briar women do not lie, cheat, steal, or violate the rights of others."  Due to our honor code, it is common practice to leave your laptop, notes, and projects on a table in the library while you go back to your room to get a forgotten paper, go to the dining hall for dinner, or just get up to to a break.  Due to this practice, one of my favorite study breaks is to leave the library and take a quick walk around campus.  Going for a quick ten-minute walk clears my mind and allows me to focus even better when I get back to work.

Other study breaks include stretching, refilling your waterbottle (remember, a well-hydrated brain is a good thinking brain!), or going to a different part of the library to print something out.

Sometimes (ahem, like right now), I use my study breaks to write blog posts! ;)

What are your favorite study breaks?

Rebecca

Lately...

Since I haven't done an instagram recap for the past two weeks...I think I'd update you on life, share some pictures, and let you know what I have up my sleeve for the rest of 2013!

Halloween 2013 was crazy and exciting all at the same time.  My Chung Mung sisters and I threw a huge Halloween party, and luckily it went off with no problems at all!  I'm not big on dressing up (I admit, I just ran out of time to get a costume), so I threw on my Lilly Pulitzer Elsa top in "Fancy Fest" because I thought the cats were appropriate for the holiday!

(L-R)
My little sister Lily, my Chung Mung sisters Kaitlyn and Chloe, and one of my favorite first years, Abby
And we can't forget that my precious Alice was a penguin for Halloween!

Fall is an amazing time in Central Virginia.  I feel so blessed to attend a college with such a gorgeous campus.  The leaves are beginning to fall and the temperatures are dropping.  I think Fall has already come and gone!
(L-R)
View of the dell looking towards Prothro (the dining hall), the facade of the chapel

And we can't forget all of the studying I've been doing...
Amen for pretty school supplies, beautiful views of campus from the new wing of the library, and study parties in the dining hall when there's no power in any other building on campus

I am finally feeling 100% better from my month long illness, I'm moved into a new dorm room, I'm not behind on any of my school work...so do you know what that means?  I am finally able to put more time into my little space on the internet.  I have some post ideas, but as always, I'd love to hear what y'all are interested in!

Make great use of today!

Blogger Besties: Part 2

To some, this is just a red Starbucks cup with a gross lipgloss stain.  Something many of you will accumulate this winter filled with yummy holiday drinks.

For me, it's more than a cup.  It's a reminder of a very special friend.  Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Breck from Whim of the South for another #BloggerBestie date.  It fell at the perfect time for both us.  We had both been having rough weeks, and we're only going into even rougher times with our school work.

Breck has so many things on her plate between school, work, a fashion show that she is volunteering with, and her internship with The Southern Blog Society.  I am finally getting over my sickness, settling into a new dorm room, and managing my internship with the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and my work with The Smart Girls Group.  Basically, if you want to know busy, just look at me and Breck's agendas...see if you find any white space!

Getting off campus and spending time with Breck was the best thing that I could have done this week.  It gave me time to step away from my daunting piles of school work and spend time with someone who "gets me."  Breck understands juggling work, school, and blogging.  Plus, chatting over a peppermint hot chocolate is never a bad thing.

Needless to say, having a blogger bestie is a necessity...so if you don't have one (or three), I recommend you go find them.

Rebecca

Life Update

Well.  It's been a week since I last posted on this little blog...and if I could explain how this past week has gone, you would understand why!

It all started with a visit to the health center almost three weeks ago.  The nurse practitioner told me I just had allergies, and she encouraged me to continue taking allergy medicine and add in some Tylenol.   A week later, my sore throat had only gotten worse and I could barely swallow!  So I marched myself back into the health center, where the other nurse practitioner told me to start taking Mucinex, in addition to Claritin and Tylenol.  Since I'm no nurse, I trusted their advice and did just that.  A few days later, the pressure in my ears was so severe, that any time I tried to lay down, I immediately started crying!  Saturday morning, I went to the Urgent Care center in town where I saw a very kind and professional doctor.  She told me that I had a severe double ear infection, a sinus infection, and I may have had strep the week before.  Oh, and that if I had waited any longer my ear drums may have exploded.  Luckily, I'm on the mend and feeling much better now that I'm taking the appropriate medications.

If you're squeamish about rodents, this is where you should stop reading... Heather.

After going to the urgent care center, I spent all of Saturday lounging in bed reading and watching movies.  I go to sleep and I'm rudely awaken at 3:30 on Sunday morning by...a mouse scurrying across my dorm room floor.  If you know me at all, you'll know that I don't do well with bugs, pests, and especially rodents.

To put things into the simplest terms, I am scared to death, paranoid, and I haven't been in my dorm room for more than a total of 15 minutes since Sunday.

So if there's ever a good reason to take a blogging hiatus, it might be due to sickness and mice.

Rebecca
