Five Ways To Start Spring Semester On The Right Foot

I head back to school tomorrow, and classes start on Wednesday.  I've finally got spring semester on the brain, so I thought I'd share my top five tips to help start the new semester on the right foot.


One.
Purchase all books and supplies before classes start.
I know sometimes it is difficult to gauge what kind of supplies you will need for each class, but it's safe to assume you'll need a notebook to take notes in and a folder or binder to keep hand outs.  If you purchase too many notebooks, just save them for next semester!  It's better to have too many, but have everything you need, than to be scrambling out on the first day of classes and trying to find what you want.

Two.
Stay organized from the very first day of classes.
I know it's tempting to spend the first week or so of classes goofing off and catching up with friends after the long break, but "syllabus week" is actually the perfect time to get ahead on work and get yourself organized for the semester!  If a professor sends you a dropbox full of readings for the semester, hunker down in the computer lab and get them all printed and filed while you don't have much else to do.  Do you see a class that is going to have reading upon reading each night?  See what you can do to get ahead so later in the semester your life will be easier.

Three.
Get Involved.
See a club that sounds interesting or an organization that's tugging at your heart strings?  The start of a new semester is a great time to join a new club. Pop into their first meeting of the semester and see what it's like!

Four.
Schedule study time/library time into your calendar.
After spending five weeks away from school, it's tough to get back into the swing of things.  For the first few weeks of the semester, I'll physically add "events" to my iCal that say Study @ Library.  It helps me remember how to budget my time and get back into the swing of things.  Then, as the semester progresses, it will become a routine to go to the library at those times and I won't even have to think twice!

Five.
Say "no".
While I did just say get involved, it's also important to balance that involvement.  If a friend asks you to help with an event or join a club, but you just know it's too big of a commitment or your heart won't be in it, don't be afraid to say no!

  2. Scheduling library time on Gcal is a GREAT idea! I think I'm going to start doing that. I've already started scheduling in workout time.

  3. These are great! I am a few weeks into my semester and these tips are very helpful. I love planning times to study and what not into my day. It makes it so much easier to see what I need to get done. Don't forget to plan into some blogging.

  4. Great tips. Of course, I failed #1...tomorrow I start and this is the first semester I haven't purchased my books way in advance. Oops. It 's my last semester so thats completely acceptable, right? Good luck to you!

  8. Seeing as I'm starting my last semester of uni this upcoming week I definitely need some inspiration to get myself into the swing of things - I'm currently in denial that it's going to be my last semester so am just choosing to ignore it, haha!
