Summer Reading List

With my internship in the city, I spend about two hours per day commuting on public transportation.  I'm usually able to find a seat on my NJ Transit train ride, so I like to use that time to dig into a good book!  With two hours of commuting and an upcoming beach vacation, I've been putting together a list of books for the summer.

I've picked some serious books, some funny books, some trashy books, some young adult books, and some books that just sounded interesting on GoodReads!

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares / The House Girl / Where'd You Go, Bernadette?, Little Bee, The Signature of All Things, The End of  Your Life Book Club

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks / Crazy Love / Surprised By Oxford / The House on Oyster Creek / A Perfect Proposal / Drinking & Tweeting

I finished two books in my first week of my internship, so there's hope in actually working through my entire summer reading list!  It's so nice to not have an assigned summer reading list or a pile of textbooks to work my way through.  Unfortunately I do have three books that I have to read for my "summer course" (my internship is for academic credit, so I am required to do some outside work to hand in to my professor), but that won't put a damper on my summer...hopefully!

What books are on your summer reading list?

Happy weekend y'all!

The week got away from me, and I completely forgot to post yesterday!

What a week...from exploring the city on Tuesday, to starting my internship on Wednesday, I'm completely exhausted!  Learning how to master the subway took all of my energy!

On to the winner of my Cotton Wraps giveaway...
Congratulations Hang Bien!  Please email me within 48 hours to claim your prize.  If you don't email me in that time frame, I'll have to pick another winner.

Have a great Memorial Day!

Rebecca

Summer Styles

With summer right around the corner, I'd usually say it's time to change into my "summer uniform."  Although my internship is fairly casual, I'll be dressing up a bit more than usual.  However, on my days off, the likelihood that you'll find me in this uniform is 110%!

summer styles

Fun top, t-shirt, button down + chino shorts + summery shoes = my summer uniform.

I'd traditionally include Jack Rogers sandals and other flip flops, but I'm trying to figure out ways to incorporate more comfortable shoes into my wardrobe.  I spent yesterday in the city figuring out where my internship is located and hanging out with some friends, and my feet were not happy at the end of the day.  However, I think they would have been much more happy in a pair of espadrille flats or Jack Purcell sneakers!

What's your go-to summer outfit?

Rebecca

New York City Bucket List

Now that I'm sitting in my sister's apartment in Jersey, this whole NYC internship seems so real!  In just a few short days, I'll be embarking on this new journey.  While it's going to be a lot of work, I can't help but have some fun while I'm in the city, too!

In addition, I'm hoping to meet up with some blog friends while I'm in their territory!

Most exciting, I can't wait to meet a bunch of my Smart Girl sisters at the Summit in July!

Rebecca

p.s., Don't forget to enter to win your own Cotton Wrap bracelet from Cotton Snaps!  The giveaway ends Wednesday at midnight.

New York State of Mind

Finally time for the big news of my summer plans!  If you follow me on instagram or twitter, you probably already know what I'm going to say...but...

I am SO excited to announce that I will be interning at Soho Rep Theatre this summer!

Remember how on Monday I had said that I would be enjoying the first few weeks of summer before heading off to my internship?  Wrong!  Later that evening I received an email from my coordinator asking if I could start next week!  The internship is part time, so I'll be in the office Wednesday through Friday.  Luckily that gives me a little bit of time at home each week, or time to go into the city and visit some friends!

If any of y'all have suggestions for low-cost (y'all, I'm an unpaid intern, further typifying the poor college kid stereotype) things to do in NYC, let me know!

I can't wait to share my summer adventures on the blog!  Follow me on instagram (@rebecca_mill), as I'm sure that's where I'll be posting most frequently!

Also, if any of y'all will be in The Big Apple at any point during the summer, let me know!  I'd love to meet up with some bloggy friends for a cup of coffee!

xoxo,
Rebecca

{sponsored} CottonSnaps

I don't know about you, but for me, summer practically calls for lazy sunny days.  Whether it be laying out on the deck with a good book, a walk around the park with my sweet pup, or a sunny picnic with the fam, I spend the entire spring semester looking forward to the slow days of summer.

What's necessary for those summer days?  Sunglasses, to shield your eyes from the sun.  And what's even more necessary when you're wearing sunglasses?  A fun pair of croakies to keep them in place!

I was recently introduced to the brand CottonSnaps, and I couldn't be more impressed with their products.  They make a line of croakies with the same name that are some of the coolest I've ever seen!  In addition to these being a soft cloth materials (mine are seersucker! But there are many other patterns to choose from), they are super user friendly!

CottonSnaps are a spring and summer essential, whether they're to add some flair to your outfit or as to not loose your glasses on a fun summer adventure.

Cotton Snaps also has a line of fun fabric wrap bracelets called Cotton Wraps.  Just like their croakies, they come in an assortment of fabrics...what a fun way to dress up an outfit!

I usually have trouble fitting my Ray Ban Wayfarers into croakies (I'm looking at you, Vineyard Vines & Country Club Prep!), but I had no problem with these CottonSnaps!  The seersucker is perfect for these hot summer days, and they're just so darn cute!  My favorite part?  The magnet in the back of the snaps!  The worst part of regular croakies, when your hair is all done up or you're a ball cap, is trying to remove your croakies without ruining your 'do.  But CottonSnap's inventive design has a magnetic clasp in the back.  Simply pull apart the two sides of your snaps, and the magnets will come undone!  Super easy, and super helpful!

I don't know how much sunning I'll be doing this summer, as I just found out I'll be starting my internship next week (more on my internship on Friday!), but surely I'll be able to take advantage of my CottonSnaps for my family's 4th of July beach vacation!

Enter for a chance to win this Cotton Wrap!  One lucky life with rMe winner will win this exact pattern...what a great way to start the summer in style!

*Only open to U.S. entries*

Can't wait for the giveaway to end to order a pair of Cotton Snaps? (I wouldn't blame you!)  The CottonSnaps team was kind enough to send a promo code for all of my readers.  If you place an order, use the code "RME10" for 10% off of your order!

xoxo,
Rebecca

disclaimer: I received free products to review and giveaway from CottonSnaps.  However, these opinions are 100% my own.

Sweet Summertime!

Long time, no talk, friends!  But that's all about to change since I'm home for the summer!  I can't wait to get into the swing of blogging, and share some exciting news about my summer plans.

I'm happy to announce that I've made it through all of my final exams, packing, most of my unpacking, etc, etc.

But first, a quick recap from the past few weeks...

Lantern Bearing @ SBC
Lantern Bearing is a tradition where each senior chooses an underclassmen to make a "lantern" for them.  The lanterns are usually baskets decorated with fake flowers. Inside, there is a candle that gets lit.  As a pair, we walk around the quad four times (or is it just three?) and then the last "lap" is done by just by the senior class.

and of course, lots and lots of studying!

I'm taking the first couple of weeks of summer to catch up on sleep, spend time with my family and pup, and tackle my ever-growing "to-read" list!

Tune in on Wednesday to see what I'll be doing once these first few weeks of summer are up!

xoxo,
Rebecca

Hi friends!

It's officially crunch time!  Classes end tomorrow and exams start on Friday.  Luckily, I only have one sit down exam, so I'll be coming home Friday afternoon or Saturday morning!

However...before I get to go home I have a to do list a mile long!  Two take home finals, a final project, and packing up my dorm room!

finals week

Luckily I'll have some of my favorite (and most necessary) things by my side to keep this week from getting too rough.  Lots of caffeine, my favorite pens for color coding my notes and agenda, comfy library clothes, water, snacks, and unfortunately, a big ole pile of textbooks.

When do y'all start your final exams?

Rebecca

Recently Read

Even though I'm in the midst of final projects, papers, and exams, I've still been making time to read.  I hadn't been sleeping well for a few weeks...I would wake up in the middle of the night unable to fall back to sleep, or just be really restless all night and wake up still exhausted.  I had read (and been told) that limiting my "screen time" (computer, phone, iPad, etc) for the hour before bed would help to "un stimulate" my brain and help me to sleep better.

I'm actually convinced that reading for 25-30 minutes before bed each night, instead of surfing instagram and tumblr, has significantly helped my sleeping.  Science people, it's true and real!

I have a pretty hefty "stash" of books on my Nook from my mom and sister, which is where I found Firefly Lane, but I also like to use GoodReads to find new books to read.  GoodReads has a "recommendation" feature that will suggest new books based on what you've read, what you've marked you'd like to read, or genres.  I also like GoodReads because you can see what other people are reading.  For instance, my friend Mackenzie and I have a similar taste in books, so if I'm looking for something new to read, I'll look at her GoodReads account and see if anything piques my interest.

Vanity Fare by Megan Caldwell
I came across the book on GoodReads, I think.  I don't remember if it was recommended based a past book or if I saw it on a friend's account, but it looked like a cute, easy read.  On a whim, I checked the Nook store and found that this book was only $2.99.  I read this over the long Easter weekend.  I enjoyed it, but I don't know if I would necessarily recommend it.

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah
If you haven't read this book, you need to.  I give this books five stars, hands down.  Despite the length, I read this book in a rather short amount of time, considering I only read before bed, because it was just that good.  I am looking forward to reading the sequel to this book, Fly Away, and Kristin Hannah's other books.

Orange Is The New Black by Piper Kerman
I'm a huge fan of the Orange Is The New Black Netflix TV series.  I had heard that the book was slightly different from the show, but I still wanted to hear the story in Kerman's words versus the producers words.  I actually liked the book more than the show because it felt more realistic to me.  I can't wait for the second season of the show (coming out in June, I think!), but this book is a must-read if you watch the show!

I'm always looking for suggestions...what should I add to my to-read list?

Rebecca
