With finals completed and a free weekend before Senior Week festivities began, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to tour some of the vineyards local to my college. Before coming to Sweet Briar, I had no clue that Central Virginia was such a wine country, but as I started looking up local vineyards to make our itinerary for last Sunday, I was astounded by the sheer number of vineyards that were within a one hour drive!
While making our route, we tried to pick vineyards that were lesser known, had a selection of both dry and sweet wines, and had good ratings on yelp. (I may have also looked up each vineyard's hashtag on instagram to see what the view looked like...aesthetics, people!) We settled on Pollak Vineyards, Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery (owned by a Sweet Briar family), and Flying Fox Vineyard.
Our first stop was Pollak Vineyards in Greenwood, Virginia...
The wines were great, but the view and outdoor scenery was even better! Katharine and I took a picnic of sorts...a loaf of bread, a wedge of brie, and a salami platter. Pollak just so happened to have picnic tables that overlooked the gorgeous lake on their property. If we didn't have plans to stop at two other wineries that day, I think we easily could have stayed at Pollak all day...provided we had a larger picnic and a bit more sunscreen!
Stay tuned for posts about our visits to Hill Top and Flying Fox over the next several days!
